Clinical Research

Our focus on clinical research is pursuing breakthrough studies through groundbreaking clinical trials to improve care for fetuses, infants, children, and adolescents with acute and chronic medical conditions. Our Research Institute supports rigorous clinical trials for rare diseases/endocrinology, gastrointestinal disorders, and hematological/oncological disorders. Our Fetal Care Center is home to the most cutting-edge research for fetal anomaly diagnostics and surgery.

Research Education and Training

Connecticut Children’s division of research provides internship opportunities for high school, undergraduate, graduate, medical and post-doctoral students.

The Undergraduate Research Assistant Program Summer Internship (URAP Summer Internship), available to students enrolled in a college or university, offers students the opportunity to explore research at Connecticut Children’s.

The 10-week summer internship provides the interns with an opportunity to shadow team members in different clinical areas throughout Connecticut Children’s. The interns also develop a research poster on an existing study with their own unique prospective.

The URAP Summer Internship focus areas include:

  • Nutrition
  • Violence Prevention
  • Youth Suicide
  • Young Mental Health
  • Cyberbullying
  • Cognitive screening tools

Connecticut Children’s Support and Teamwork Resulting in Valuable Experiences (STRIVE) initiative is a partnership between the health system and Bloomfield High School (BHS) to promote future career opportunities to students. It was developed by Connecticut Children’s Research Operations and Development department to help build interest among students in healthcare careers and to increase workforce diversity at healthcare organizations. To date, STRIVE has hosted career days at Connecticut Children’s and career panels at Bloomfield High School.

Research Internship Summer Experience (RISE) allows talented undergraduates to spend 6 weeks during the summer within the Research Institute at Connecticut Children’s. Students are able to engage in clinical research related activities, and hear from a Senior Biostatistician, a Scientific Grant Writer, and Senior Research staff. Guidance and supervision of the research students was provided by a research team member. The RISE students had the ability to shadow a variety of specialties at Connecticut Children’s.

The Undergraduate Research Internship allows Trinity College students to take part in an internship at Connecticut Children’s for course credit. This engages students research activities in a clinical setting.

Students at the Frank H Netter MD School of Medicine can receive course credit for an SRCC course including Research Methodology, Narrative Medicine, and Concentration/Capstone.
