Connecticut Children’s Echocardiography Laboratory performs advanced ultrasound imaging of the heart for fetuses, neonates, children, teenagers, and adults. Our program is dedicated to optimizing quality of care for patients with congenital and acquired heart disease and is certified by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission.
What Is Echocardiography?
Echocardiography is a tool to evaluate cardiac structure and function using ultrasound waves. Cardiac ultrasounds provide critical information to aid cardiologists and surgeons in the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease. Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) is a form of noninvasive imaging that provides a safe, effective evaluation of the heart and can be performed in outpatient clinics, inpatient units, within the Emergency Department, and in the operating room. Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) uses ultrasound waves to create images of the heart using a probe that is inserted into the esophagus under sedation that can help guide interventions.
Specialized Care From Experienced Professionals
Connecticut Children’s Echocardiography Lab is dedicated to performing the highest quality echocardiograms with efficient and accurate interpretation to serve babies, children, and adults with congenital heart disease and acquired cardiac illness. Our team performs more than 8,000 studies per year leveraging the latest advances in technology and equipment. The lab is based at Connecticut Children’s – Hartford, but also provides services at all Connecticut Children’s cardiology locations throughout the region. The team includes cardiologists with a wide range of subspecialty expertise in noninvasive imaging and sonographers with advanced training in pediatric cardiac ultrasound.
Quality improvement and research are championed within the echocardiography lab, with dedicated task forces bringing new techniques and emerging technologies to serve our patients with heart disease at Connecticut Children’s. We are proud to be certified by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission in the performance of fetal, pediatric, and adult congenital transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography. Our lab is also home to the School of Pediatric Cardiac Ultrasound through the Hoffman School of Cardiac Ultrasound.
