Vascular Anomalies

Vascular anomalies are abnormalities that can affect capillaries, veins, arteries and lymphatics. Common types of vascular abnormalities include:

• Infantile hemangiomas
• Venous and arteriovenous malformations
• Lymphatic malformation
• Klippel-Trenaunay Syndrome
• Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma
• Sturge-Weber Syndrome
• Port wine stains
• Birthmarks

These abnormalities usually show up either at birth or within a few weeks of birth, growing most rapidly between 2-6 months. They may be recognized early on by parents or primary care providers as a red mark on the child.

Hemangiomas and other malformations become concerning when their presence impairs vision, obstructs airways, or destroys normal tissue. Timely treatment can result in significant improvement in symptoms and appearance.

Connecticut Children’s Vascular Anomalies Program specializes in the diagnosis and advanced care of children with vascular anomalies, such as hemangiomas, lympangiomas, arteriovenous malformations and other rare anomalies. The program sees patients at Connecticut Children’s – Hartford.

• Radiology testing, including ultrasound, X-ray, CT scan, MRI and angiography
• Medical therapy, including interventional radiology procedures
